Musically Diverse Weekend

What do Dido, Tim McGraw, Beethoven, DMX, and M.C. Hammer have in common?

They're all on CD's I purchased this weekend.

Calvin being away on Friday night left Marie and I to entertain ourselves. So we had an excellent (if I do say so myself) dinner of fettuccini alfredo with shrimp and asparagus, and then we went to Cold Stone to visit Michael and get some ice cream. Chocolate Decadence ice cream with coconut, caramel, Oreo cookies, and walnuts. Oh yeah, baby.

Then we went to our local Borders and purchased some CD's (and a journal for Marie, who likes to write, too). I got a great deal on a classical piano compilation. Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata, Rhapsody in Blue... all the popular stuff that doesn't lose its beauty for me no matter how many times (and in how many inappropriate movie scenes) I hear it. An impulse buy of Vince Guaraldi playing songs from The Peanuts. There is no better happy chipper song than "Linus and Lucy". Another impulse buy of Tim McGraw's greatest hits, because he's just a beautiful man and I do love his voice. Plus, of course, "I Like It, I Love It". Man, I wish I could pull of wearing a hat the way that man does. It must be a guy thing.

After a late warm-fuzzy conversation with Calvin over the phone, I hit the sack and woke up this morning around 9:00. I watched "Down To You" on cable, which is pretty much just like any other movie Julia Stiles and Freddie Prinze (atrocious spelling on both their names, probably) have been in. I think Julia Stiles could be a pretty great young actor if she could just break out of these types of roles. I'm really impressed with that young man she played opposite of in "10 Things I Hate About You" - the Australian kid who was in The Patriot with Mel Gibson, and is in something else out recently or about to come out. I can't think of his name at the moment, and I'm too lazy to log on and look it up. Heath Ledger, Marie tells me. He seems to have "that" quality that will keep bringing him movies until he's old and gray, I think.

Marie and I headed to the Arizona Mills mall at about 1:00, and ate at the Paradise Cafe. We wandered around for a while looking for a Valentine present for her boyfriend, and grabbed some coffee at Starbucks. I made myself practically high at a candle shop, smelling lilac and hazelnut coffee and chocolate truffle candles. We went to Virgin Records, and that's where I made additional musical purchases. "Millenium Hip Hop Party" with Run-D.M.C.'s version of "Walk This Way", Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina", "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (and I wonder why he abandoned rap for a movie career?), "Jump Around" by House of Pain. I was on an 80's/early 90's rap flashback. It suited my mood today. I also got "Hip Hop Hits Volume 4" to keep myself up to date on the trend. What can I say, I like "Party Up (Up In Here)" and "The Next Episode" and "The Real Slim Shady". Again, it's a mood thing. My final purchase was Dido's "No Angel" debut CD. She's got a lovely voice, and her song "Here With Me" is one of my favorites. Uplifting, I think.

I bought a boom box (they actually still call 'em that) for the bedroom, and right now I'm listening to Tim McGraw ("I like it, I love it, I want some more of it") and tapping away. Calvin just called to say he's on the way home, Marie's listening to her CD purchase in the computer room, Michael's off to work, and the dogs are wrestling in the back yard.

It's been a good day.

Your Mission, should you choose to accept it...

Do what I did. Go to a music store and pick out a CD totally against what your normal taste might be. I got some good finds this weekend.

Results From Yesterday's Mission

The only way to get a Bacon Number any higher than 3 is to do a really obscure actor, like from a silent movie or something. But he's still connected. It's an alien thing or something. I wonder how many degrees of separation I personally am from Kevin Bacon?

I grabbed the design idea for the box thingy from Anna.
