Momentary Thought

Calvin's mad at me because I screamed (waking him up) when a spider crawled over my leg as I was sitting here on the floor typing this. I tried to get him to get out of bed and take care of it (The Naked Scourge of Spiders Everywhere!) but in the end had to hit it myself. With his shoe.

High/Low

High: It's Sunday, and I don't have to work tomorrow.

Low: Jo's kitty cat Whimsey is gravely ill.

Current Obsession

Grin Source

Calvin, telling me that spiders usually travel in pairs.

I'm having a totally geeked out weekend. I finally got the DSL line working in the bedroom yesterday afternoon, and ever since I've been enjoying the novelty of surfing, posting, writing e-mail, and perusing journals from the relative comfort of my own bedroom. I say "relative" comfort because we don't have a desk in here yet, so I'm sitting on a blanket on the floor, propped up against the wall with a pillow behind me. My butt is falling asleep as I type.

There was even a point yesterday where I was goofing around on my laptop, and Calvin was on the floor next to me doing some work on *his* laptop. Two lovers and their laptops. Awww... It was a Kodak moment, I swear.

Ah, but the obsession doesn't stop there. It doesn't even really *begin* there. And I will tell you why, folks.

I have discovered the joys of Napster. Oh, yes. Oh, baby.

As I type this I am downloading a rare, live version of Aerosmith doing "Sweet Emotion" with Led Zeppelin. Now, that's too cool. That just rocks six ways to Sunday, I'm tellin' ya.

Once I got going yesterday, I found it hard to stop. I downloaded, thought of another song, downloaded, thought of *another* song, downloaded, thought of two more songs, tried downloading multiple songs at once, discovered it worked, did a little Snoopy Dance, and kept on a-truckin'.

Knowing my luck, I'll just get hooked on this stuff when The Man will shut down Napster for good. Ah, well, until then I'm downloading like there's no tomorrow. It's like making one really big mix tape. I'm mentally rubbing my hands together over all the cool songs I'll be able to listen to at work. If I can find my headphones. The "no music" rule and all. Damn commie pinkos.

My taste in music kicks butt, no?

We watched "The Art of War" last night. Calvin had already seen it, in his hotel room in Chicago, and gave it a thumb's-up. He rented it again last night so I could watch it. Actually, he went to the movie store with the kids while I was still geeking over Napster. "What Lies Beneath" is on tonight's agenda.

Anyway. We curled up in bed (because, you know, we have a TV/VCR and cable in our room now - I'm still geeked about that, too) and munched and drank and watched. I think I was bothering him a bit with my anticipation of the plot line. "His partner's involved. I can tell because even though we're supposed to *think* he's dead, we're never shown the body." "Nope, he's going to get there too late to save her. It's too early in the movie for him to have an ally yet." "The head boss chick is involved. She's kissing the UN Ambassador's butt a little too much." I was right about everything (sorry about the spoilers, for those of you who haven't seen it). At one point Calvin huffed and said "Do you just want to turn the movie off?"

Heh.

At any rate, I suppose I ought to get something done around here, to make up for yesterday's sloth. Or not. I'm hoping that Calvin wants to go to his mom's restaurant for lunch. And maybe we'll go looking at desks. And, ooh! The Greek Festival is this weekend! Mmm... baklava... We're supposed to get in a run to the dump, too. Hah. Sure.

Maybe I'll just sit here and continue to download. Man, I wish Calvin would get up so I can play some of my new acquisitions.

Well! Off I go to enjoy the novelty of FTP-ing from the relative comfort of my bedroom!

Your Mission, should you choose to accept it...

In Maine I used to visit a certain used bookstore in the Old Port. I'd go there at least once a week, while I worked in the area. I just love the smell of old, pulpy, dusty books. And you can find some great stuff, digging around in the piles and back-of-beyond shelves. In Arizona, the only used bookstore I've found is "Bookman's", which I hate. Big and commercialized and warehouse-like. I miss the little hole-in-the-wall places that were so common back east. I actually wanted to own one, once. Really, I still do. What better job is there than to sit all day among stacks and stacks of books?

So. Dig up a used bookstore in your area. Go exploring through the stacks. E-mail me with what you've found. Or, if you've already gone recently, let me know what you discovered.
