February 24, 2005SurfacingI will get a gosh darned razzlefrackin' entry out this week, if I have to put everything else off to do so. It's amazing that, as busy as I've been since last we spoke, there's not a lot to talk about. Some stuff happened, I worked, we're still struggling with the garage. School is going along (there's a LOT more homework in on-line classes than in classroom classes). I've been doing so much damned writing, and yet I'm finding it hard to get into an entry groove. Let's see. Well, two things I'm excited about: The first is that we got some new artwork to replace the neons in the game room. "The Black Drape" and "Red Dress" by Michael J. Austin. ![]() ![]() Calvin and I fell in love with them at first sight, but Marie walked by them as we brought them in from the truck and grunted, "Humph. Chicks." There's no accounting for taste, I guess. It seems to me that we're going with a boldly-colored theme in our house - the red living room and all the black accents of frames and wrought iron, and now these. Now we just need some kind of kitchen table that creates a natural transition from the game room into the living room - in red and black, I suppose. A black laquer table with black chairs and red cushions? I have no idea. Calvin and I looked around a bit last night at some local furniture stores, but we really didn't find anything that struck our fancy. We have no table now (see below), and it makes the space seem weird and huge and empty. Secondly, I am so excited about the movie version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy coming out in April. Right out geeked, I tell you. As most of you know, I've been a big fan of Douglas Adams since childhood. So I will be first in line to see this movie. I have high expectations, though, that I know will not be met. For instance, of the pictures I've seen thus far, Zaphod (Sam Rockwell - should be good) only has one head. And the casting they did for Ford Prefect DOES NOT match my mental image. But I do like Mos Def as an actor, so it may work out alright. What they DID get right is Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin (poor Willow - Warwick Davis - is playing his body), and Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast. Douglas Adams himself as the voice of The Guide would have been just perfect. And John Malcovich is "Humma Kavula", which character, I confess, I can't recall. And I thought I had memorized the whole damned book. I'm very disappointed in myself. Seems a lot of "big name" actors wanted to get on board with this, though, for which I'm glad. Calvin thought the book was dumb (what I read to him, and what I forced him to listen to on CD - he just doesn't "get" British humor), but he always thinks the movie version of books is better than the books themselves, so perhaps I'll make a HHGttG fan of him yet. "And on the Seventh day, God rested. And then He got bored, so He created the Geek. And He gave it a mind full of random 80's movie lines, questionable fashion sense, and a penchant for science fiction. And He saw that it was Good." Let's see. What else is newsworthy? I had a job interview with another group at AcronymCo, so I'll let you all know how that goes. One and a half hours of behavioral interviewing. Technical questions I understand, but behavioral questions? They're just used for screening newbies to see if they "fit" into the culture - everyone already *knows* how I behave. (Shaddap) I've also applied for another position that I should be interviewed for next week. Just trying to find something new, and different management who may actually allow me to move up in my career. Calvin and I (mostly Calvin) have been working steadily on the garage for weeks. The cabinets mostly kind of a little bit kicked our asses. They don't exactly just "go together". They require some rigging and creative screwing (heh). Calvin has the patience of Saints (I know! Gasp!), and we're down to the last two small cabinets, which should be cake compared to the big bastards that kicked our asses. They'd better be cake, we cancelled our trip to Sedona in order to get this crap done with. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll post full-on "after" pictures when we get everything organized. Readers: "We can hardly wait." Laura: "Hush, you." I helped my girlfriend Dani move on President's Day. Just she and I and another girlfriend from work. We muscled my kitchen table (which I gave to her - and that damn thing, as well as being huge, is SOLID and HEAVY and UNWIELDY), a washer, a dryer, a couch, an overstuffed chair, two mattresses, a bed frame, and fifty or so boxes. Just the three of us. In just two trips. Rock, is all I can say. We put all the stuff in their approximate permanent location in Dani's new place, and I have bruises ALL up and down my limbs. I hate stairs. I hate narrow doors. Calvin and a male friend of Dani's came to help us unload the last load, and we all went for steaks and beer. Mmm... beer... Marie's truck is all fixed, after a LOT of rigamarole. The replacement stereo just got installed last night, and we put in an ALARM, dammit. Marie also has remote start up and keyless entry now. She's pretty geeked. Especially considering she had no automated ANYTHING before. No auto door locks, no auto windows, not even an external door keyhole on her passenger door. Just pretty rims and a thumper stereo. Somewhat related to this is the fact that Calvin and I (again, mostly Calvin) installed (over the course of TWO DAYS) a garage door opener. Never had one before. Made me feel all grown up. At any rate, once we get all the stuff in the garage put in its place (read: build MORE storage in the side yard because have too much stuff to store in the garage), we'll be able to park the Avalanche and the Colorado AND the motorcycle inside the garage. First time we'd be able to do anything like that EVER in the HISTORY OF THE HOUSE. We have become our parents. For crying out loud, this stuff is giving us pleasure and happiness. Our coolness factor just went down a notch or two. Okay, so. I've said it before in the history of this journal, I'll say it again now, and it will be said some more in the future. I will make a concerted effort to update more frequently. I'm getting behind on my own chronicaling (damn, I need spell check for that word), which won't do at all. I blame most of my absense on late night teleconferences and school. Mostly the homework. Of which there is a lot, have I mentioned? And it's only one class - I'm DOOMED next semester when I'm taking two classes. At any rate, I love the format of this journal too much to give up on it and just go to straight weblogging or using something like Diaryland. But you may want to hang out at Colloquial now and then, because if I can't manage a full-fledged entry, I'll be posting over there. HomeSite's spell checker seems to be jacked up, so I apologize for any errors contained herein. You guys don't have to worry about letting me know of my mistakes - Archibael will send me a comprehensive e-mail listing spelling and grammatical errors, you can be assured. Oh Editor, my Editor. Over and out! Comments on this entry? Head on over to Colloquial!
