Full Circle

The arrangements to bring the kids back home have begun.

Five years ago (?!?) we sent Michael away to boot camp. Next month he's coming back home. And so are Lilly and the babies. We sent away one, we're getting back five. How's that for a return on our investment? Heh.

Lilly is driving the babies out here on Friday and leaving them with us for two weeks while she and Michael finish things up on base. Then she's driving back out with their belongings in a U-Haul while Michael stays in California for a couple more weeks (they're departure dates didn't *exactly* coincide, but pretty damned close considering they went in a year apart and didn't know each other). Then Michael comes home at the end of May or beginning of June.

All the angst and worry and life-altering changes that began five years ago have finally come full circle. It seems like the time has gone by so fast, and yet so slowly when I think about all the changes that have occurred in that time. Michael and Lilly got married. They had Robert and we were delighted, they had Devlin and we were delighted, they had Roman and we're delighted. They took trips to Arizona, we took trips to California. Marie went all the way through high school, got her license, and got her truck. She's going to prom this weekend. She graduates in a month. And she's going to college in August.

There have been family vacations and quiet weekends. Calvin and I have continued to grow, enrich, and deepen our relationship. Friends came into our lives and friends moved away. Pets came and pets went. There was drama, and there was peace. A whole hell of a lot happens in five years. It makes me simultaneously eager and trepidatious to see what the next five years holds for us.

Anyway! I did mention up there at the beginning of this entry that we will have sole possession and spoiling rights of all three little boys for a couple of weeks, starting this weekend. Calvin and I are both able to take some time off to corrupt bond with the boys, and we're looking forward to it immensely. Yes, we know that they are three pre-articulate babies in diapers, one of them a mere six weeks old. Yet all Calvin and I see are afternoons wrestling in the grass, evenings snuggling on the couch, naps in the hammock, bubble baths, damp hair smelling of Johnson's Baby Shampoo, photo opportunities, tickle sessions, and all sorts of other fun grandparenty type stuff. With a lot of child wrangling, diaper changing, mess cleaning, food preparing, and noise dampening in the process.

There will be pictures. Oh, yes. There will be pictures.
