Homage to the power of the Internet

This will just be a quickie entry. There are a couple of things going on in the online journalling/blogging world that I find to be really wonderful. They make me proud to be able to count myself as a member of the OLJ/blog community.

First off is the initiative that Pamie kicked off, which took on a life of its own. The Oakland Public Library was facing closure due to lack of funding to keep it open. Due to the power of the internet (and, not so incidentally, Pamie's popularity which provided visibility into the issue), donations have been pouring in. From all over the world, which certainly surprised the Oakland librarians. Go, read about it, and if you're so inclined, add your name to the ever-growing list of donators. It's a worthy cause!

Another issue has been spoken of by Pamie, and Rob, Eliza, and a whole slew of others. Proof that the OLJ community takes care of their own! Poor Allyson and Chris have lost everything they own, including their poor puppy Murphy, in a horrific fire. Donation opportunities have been set up at ackrite.org to help out this deserving couple.

The power of the internet, people. It's an awesome thing. I can't begin to describe how cool the entire phenomena of this online community is.

Oh, on a somewhat unrelated, yet related, note: It looks like I'll be attending the Web Writers Weekend, aka JournalCon 2003, in Austin this October. Dawn and I will be sharing a room, and y'all know it'll be THE place to rock out.

Party on, Wayne. Party on, Garth.
