Momentary Thought

I'm actually thinking of finding new employment - perhaps working in a plant nursery. No stress, pretty flowers, dirt under my fingernails - who could ask for anything more?

High/Low

High: Camping in six days!!!

Low: Back to counting calories - here.

Current Obsession

Winning the lottery.

Got another submission for Storyteller. While the story itself isn't funny, the novelty of receiving entries still exists. Go check it out, it's a good one!

Friday when I checked the mail I discovered that we were blessed with letters from Michael - not one, not two, but three of them, waiting for us. So I ran back home (yes, I *ran*) and Calvin, Marie and I sat down at the kitchen table. Calvin read aloud - transcribed here for your reading pleasure:

Hi guys,

I have arrived safely at MCRD San Diego, and am about to begin my first week of training. I get three meals a day and about 8 hours of sleep a night. Please don't send any books, magazines, or boxes with food or anything else (spiritual materials and newspaper clips are OK). We will make PX calls throughout our training, so I won't need anything but your love and support... I really need it. I am on a strict diet and training schedule, so don't send any cookies or junk food, because I can't store them anywhere. I will get my mail when my D.I. gets it in from the Post Office, every day but Sundays. I will be given the opportunity to write you nightly and mail them in the morning.

My mailing address is...

I love you guys. To get through this I'm going to need you guys. Send letters even if I can't, OK? Send the post cards that (Michael's girlfriend) sent me and some calling cards. Pics help also you know :). I miss you so much, you don't know how hard this really is. Call (girlfriend) and tell her to write and send pics, too... give her the address, please.

Loving and missing you,
(all of you, MARIE :)

Michael

p.s. - Give the address to Mom and family too, please.

p.p.s. - You can't accept collect calls so I could talk to you w/out those cards. I called on the 14th but couldn't get through. :(

At hearing that second p.s., Calvin flipped out. We've been having such trouble with our phone service accepting collect calls. I'd even called the phone company the week before Michael left to make sure there was nothing interfering with our ability to accept collect calls, but it appears it's still dysfunctional. So I called them again, the minute Calvin got done reading the letter, and they assured me they'd look into the situation. I think I'm going to get Michael some calling cards anyway, though, sometime this week.

Hi guys,

Well... I got the FLU, and a nasty case of tendinitis in my left knee. It sux. Oh well. I may be told to stay in bed tomorrow... shux :) I may also get put on MRP which will push my grad date out a lil. I'll keep you posted. Have you heard from (girlfriend) yet? Have those postcards arrived? If so then send them to me please. I reiterate... THIS IS HARD!!! Heh, but at least church is cool. How are you guys by the way? Sometimes I wish I was home too, so I could know first hand. How's the mo (Editor's note: That'd be Marie.) doin'? I hope she isn't getting into any trouble. If so, just say "LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR BROTHER!!" That should do the trick. :) I'd better get going now though. I love you guys. Write lots.

Missin' you,

Dork Boy

At this point we came to the realization that Michael hadn't received the letter we sent him - with those much-coveted post cards included.

Hi guys,

My knee is getting a little bit better. At least that is good. My flu is still lingering though. They didn't drop me either so I'm still on for grad. for Sept. 7th. I'm really bored right now. I miss you guys a lot. I got a letter from Grandma and Grandpa R. (Editor's note: Those are Calvin's grandparents.) It really lifted my spirits. They are so sweet. I'm expecting more mail soon. This is getting a little easier as the days drag on. If you guys hear from (his friend) tell him to write me, too. If you guys find any new pics at all, send 'em here. I like looking at my good looking family. ;-) Not much to write about today, sorry. I'd better end it here before I get yelled at. Love you guys!

Michael

What we found odd about this is that we're pretty sure we sent out our letter before the grandparents sent theirs. We have no idea what's holding up our mail getting to him. But it seems to be working in reverse as well, since we got all three of his letters in Friday's mail.

I sent out another letter package to him this morning - a manila envelope with three different letters from us (written throughout the weekend), plus two ~Snerkology~ entries printed out (this one and this one), and some newspaper clippings Marie chose.

I just hope I stuck enough postage on the darn thing - I think I'll need to invest in one of those postage scales. Are "regular people" allowed to own those things?
