prev archive blog next Why is it that "they" keep saying that Voldemort and Harry are alike in being half-bloods, when Harry's parents were both wizards? (Can you just HEAR Calvin's eyes rolling right now?) I'm grateful for the quiet of the house. My hamstrings are going to HURT tomorrow. Nuthin'. Nuthin'. 2003 - I didn't write an entry - I was in Maine - but here's a link to the first of the Hawaii entries. 2002 - No entry - I was on my honeymoon! 2001 - No entry - I was camping. Hmm. The first of July seems to be a hot travel time for me. Storyteller Bio People Links Recipes Books |
July 3, 2004Quiet DayI'm having a nice, quiet day (so far - it's 10 minutes of 10). Calvin had to work this morning and I'd planned on sleeping in, but his on-call phone went off while he was in the shower, so I got up to take it to him, and then just stayed up. I perused TUS while I drank my coffee and had a cruller, and Calvin ooh'ed and ahh'ed at the women's tennis match on TV (Wimbledon? Something). He's all about the lingerie they seem to be passing off as tennis outfits these days. Calvin went off to work, and I decided to sit out on the patio with a book (HP and the Order of the Phoenix, in case you couldn't tell by the sidebar) and enjoy the weather before it got to be 106, today's expected high. The morning sky was cloudless and I kept looking up to be surprised, yet again, at how blue it seemed. Looking out the window now, it's lightened from the deep, dark blue it was just a few hours ago. It's like the heat of the sun is fading the sky - gah, it's hell out there already, and it's before 10:00. I read for a very pleasant hour, before the neighbor's effing dog started barking yet again, so I moved inside to finish up the last few pages of the book. And then got on-line to see if there was any news of when "HP and the Half-Blood Prince" will be out. I have a feeling about this next book, and some theories, but I won't post 'em here in case there are readers who don't want to come across spoilers. Calvin's probably rolling his eyes even harder, now - I wish he liked to read, I'd love to be able to discuss books with him. I suppressed the temptation to just start reading all over again from the beginning (those of you who read last year will recall that I've already read "Phoenix" - it took me two days last time, and two days again this time). I got up, put on some workout clothes and braided my hair, and hauled out my yoga mat. The cat, as usual, flopped right down in the middle of it as I set up the DVD and got a cup of water. Cat hair and sticky mats do not mix well. Or, perhaps they mix too well. While stretching and bending, I came to realize that my left side is MUCH more inflexible than my right side. For instance, I can manage a triangle pose perfectly well with my right arm on the floor and my left arm extended, but I can't do it with my left arm on the floor and my right leg extended. I can't even touch my fingertips to the ground, going that way. Same with extended side stretch. I can put my right hand down to the ground when I'm stretching to the right, but when I stretch to the left I have to use the modification and rest my elbow on my bent left knee. Now, I've always known that my hamstrings are tight - I can't do the seated forward bend or the standing forward bend worth crap - I barely make it beyond a 90 degree angle when seated, though I can go a bit further when standing. I'm much better at downward facing dog, wide legged forward bend, and warrior pose. I find the majority of the seated twists easy, too (though not contorted like the lady in this picture is! Yeesh.) Locust always makes my lower ribs hurt where I'm balancing on the floor. And Calvin is especially fond of bridge pose, when he catches me at it. Heh. Of course, I most enjoy child's pose and relaxation pose (the website calls it "corpse pose", great), because they mean that I'm coming to the end of the video - Suzanne Deason's Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss. It's the first and only yoga video I have, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I find it to be decent and well-paced. Anyway, I yoga'ed my little heart out for about 45 minutes, then came into the bedroom with my water to sit down and write this entry. I'm going to throw on my bathing suit and lie out in the sun in an attempt to make myself slightly less white, but I'm sure I'll only be able to stand about ten minutes or so. Then it's shower, lunch, and probably a new book! So far, today is making me pretty darned happy. I'm hoping the weekend progresses in the same manner. Hopefully Calvin won't have to work tomorrow, too. His job is such that when companies with production areas perform a holiday shut down, which is common in the industry, he gets to go in behind them and update their building controls while there's nothing running. Makes for a lot of 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas interruptions. At any rate, we have nothing currently planned for the long weekend, since we don't know how much of it Calvin will have to work. I can't think of much of anything I'd like to do outside (damn this state and its lack of beaches), but I do have a hankering to see the new Spiderman movie. So. That's the news. For those folks in the US celebrating the 4th, happy Independence Day! If you don't happen to be in the US, well, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Comments on this entry?
