Momentary Thought

Aimster is the only thing preserving my sanity today. Thanks to the songs I downloaded from it, work is passing by at a reasonable pace. What work I can get done, anyway, since access to AcronymCo's intranet is terminated for the time being. That darned nasty Code Red virus, don't ya know. And I'm just brokenhearted that I can't access my teleconference reservations. Shuckydarnpoo.

High/Low

High: Tuesday is passing by relatively pleasantly.

Low: Anyone care to wager the odds of getting the required funds from X(f) for school clothes and braces?

I've been just about immersed in as much domesticity as my little heart can stand.

Marie and I accomplished about half of her required school clothes shopping, as I believe I mentioned. And I must say I really enjoyed shopping with her - it appears that we share a similar taste in clothing. Which should reassure Calvin, since Marie isn't likely to make public appearances in garments that are too low cut, or too high cut. In an hour, we'd acquired enough for several different outfits. Plus a pair of shoes. They were both for the right foot, but still. Heh. We didn't realize it until we got 'em home. Calvin and I took them back last weekend while Marie was at her mom's, and I picked up new shoes and another sweater for her. Which I just might borrow sometime. You know, since we both wear the same size in shirts and everything.

Plus there's been a lot of planning around the trip to San Diego for Michael's graduation in September. What started out as making arrangements for just me, Calvin and Marie, has now turned into a regular family reunion. Now accompanying us are Calvin's mom, sister, and grandparents. Michael will be ecstatic, I think. I know we're all looking forward to it. The grandparents will ride down to San Diego with us, and they're such charming and sweet people that it'll be a fun ride. I made hotel reservations for all of us, and have talked to Calvin's sister three times, his mom twice, and his grandparents four times. Four times, because what I tell the grandfather, the grandmother has to call me back on to confirm, and vice-versa. They're just too adorable.

This weekend Calvin and I had a fantastic time going through all the family pictures and putting them in a myriad of frames we bought from Pier One. Now, that kind of stuff I can totally get into. There were some circumstances where I couldn't tell the difference between a picture of Calvin as a baby, and a picture of Michael. They look *exactly* alike. And Marie was an adorable kid (I wonder what happened? Kidding, Marie!), which she points out to anyone who will stand still long enough to look - "Look at me! I was so cute!" Yes, dear, we know. I thoroughly enjoy standing and looking at all the pictures - and we put up a lot of them. It gives me a great feeling to be a part of a family, and having the pictures up on the wall makes me feel grateful to Calvin for making me a part of his family. Our family. My family. That's just too cool to be able to say that. We've got baby pictures of the kids, Calvin, and even one of me that my grandmother sent. Plus vacation pictures of Maine and Utah, and some pictures I took of the kids for a Father's Day gift to Calvin. I'll get around to scanning some of them some day. I've had some requests to see Michael's graduation picture - yes, he is a handsome thing. Stop drooling. He's only 18 and too busy for *you*.

Calvin's mom has been wanting to get the family pictures back from us - we're in possession of the childhood pictures of Calvin and his sisters. They're either in yellowing, tearing envelopes, or dried, flaking albums. Many are just lying loose in the bottom of the box. So I called Calvin's sister and we're going to put them all together in new albums, and give them to Calvin's mom for a birthday present. I was a little nervous about suggesting it, not wanting to intrude, or something. I guess I feared that maybe his sister or mother would feel like it's none of my business to be involved in organizing the family's photos. Whatever. Calvin raised an eyebrow when I said that, but I still feel a little formal with his family. I think this will be a good opportunity for me to get to know his sister better. She was very enthusiastic about the idea, at any rate.

I took the day off from work yesterday and cleaned the house, plus made up a potato salad and baked a cake. I paid bills, made some phone calls regarding needed truck repairs, IM'ed with Dawn, and ran Marie to her friend's house.

Then this morning I met with Marie's orthodontist, to talk about the braces she needs. Of course, they had the molds for one kid, and the ex-rays for another kid, so we couldn't get much accomplished until I could examine Marie's teeth and call the dentist back to let him know if she's got "fangs" or not (one of the molds had significantly protruding eyeteeth, and I couldn't for the life of me remember if Marie's were shaped like that or not). X(f) is visiting us at home tonight to figure out the whole split-payment arrangements.

Marie's 8th grade orientation is next week, and I'm going to take her so I can meet with all of her teachers. Marie and I have an agreement of how we're going to stay on top of her homework this year - last year she really struggled with it. We have a calendar all set up in the kitchen for her to record her assignments on, and I'll be following up with her teachers consistently to make sure she doesn't fall behind.

So! Just call me Happy Homemaker. Pretty Polly Parental Unit. Frau of Frou-Frou. Domestic Dominatrix.

(No, the house still isn't painted. Hush, you.)

Michael's Update Box

No personal letters, although we've sent him a few. But we did get a flyer, addressed to us by him, that outlines the whole graduation thing - dinners, tours, ceremonies, etc.
