Ode to my Background Picture

Oh, Patrick Dempsey!
Delicious, sexy, and hot.
If we met, I'd melt.

Oh, Patrick Dempsey!
Each time I see your picture,
my heart, it flutters.

Oh, Patrick Dempsey!
The only man with whom my
hub would let me sleep.

Oh, Patrick Dempsey!
I wonder if I could get
you in bed with us?

Oh, Patrick Dempsey!
I promise I will really
make it worth your time.

Oh, Patrick Dempsey!
Sigh sigh sigh sigh sigh.
Sigh sigh sigh sigh, for you I
Hyperventilate.

Now playing...

We picked up a really great CD tonight.

We're listening to it right now on the couch - I'm futzing on the laptop, Calvin is laying with his head in my lap. Every now and then I reach over to stroke his face or smooth my hand over his hair.

I'm happy.

Bliss.

I just realized that I'm on vacation from December 22nd through January 7th and don't go back to work until the 8th. That's 17 straight days off. AND, coincidentally, I have 17 more working days until vacation.

Tenure is such a good thing.

Watch it. Talk about it. Get the word out.

Everyone needs to watch this. It has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with humanity.

I wonder how many times I've seen Star Wars - A New Hope? It's on right now, it's the scene where R2-D2 and C3-PO have landed their escape pod in the desert. "That malfunctioning little twerp, this is all his fault. He tricked me into going this way, but he'll do no better."

Heh.

It was a nice Thanksgiving! I only had to cook mashed potatoes and make a salad, though I'm sure I'll be cooking the turkey we have in the near future. It's taking altogether too much room in our already-cramped fridge. We went over to the Grandparents' for dinner and enjoyed spending time with the family. Calvin rode my motorcycle up while I followed in the Avalanche with Michael and Marie. They were subject to listening to my iPod via the transmitter - she who drives manages the musical selection. We got home again relatively early, and took a *four hour nap*. Friggin tryptophan.

I talked briefly to my sister - long enough for her to tell me that she had a house fire (no one was hurt), her husband got into a head-on collision with their three boys in the car (no one was hurt), and she'd been drinking beer since 6:00 a.m. while cooking Thanksgiving dinner. (Husband - "Can I cook you breakfast?" Sister - "Sure!" Husband, handing her a beer - "Here you go.")

So now I'm blogging, looking for books and music on MP3 Rocket, tossing tequila shots, and Calvin forced me to watch Sixteen Candles AGAIN. After that came Star Wars, and here we are. Calvin just took off for the video store. Yes, we have NetFlix AND rent from the video store. I protest, but I am overruled.

I've taken to wearing pigtails when we're out riding. Calvin thinks it's velly sessy. I'm hot.

I've managed to be somewhat productive this week, get a lot of sleep, and completely avoid working out. A complete success.

Meta

I've been having some mad-crazy dreams lately. I REALLY need to maintain a record of them over at Waking Mind. That's what the blog is for, after all. Anyway, last night I was married to the guy that plays Warrick on CSI (oh, DARN - and Calvin? Hush, you. I KNOW you've had dreams about Kate Beckinsale.) We had a BITCHIN' loft with hardwood floors, a bar, beautiful decor, huge open spaces, and really snobby neighbors. Then somehow things turned all Mission Impossible, the building was blown up, and we were being followed around the grocery store (where else would YOU go after your home was blown up?) by the bad guys.

Yeah, I don't know either.

Actually, I have a suspicion. My doc and I decided that my brain is finally healthy, and I can go off the meds I was taking for depression and anxiety. Wellbutrin is something that I can just stop taking, with no ill effects. But Effexor is a different beast entirely. I have to decrease the dosage slowly, and in stages. Even managing it carefully, I get the shakes. I get dizzy. I wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.

And apparently I have crazy-ass dreams.

There's absolutely no way to avoid the side effects of coming off the drug. It SO hasn't been a joy. But it should only last a couple of more weeks, and then I'll be done.

I went for a motor ride last night, after Grey's Anatomy (oh, the love I feel for Grey's Anatomy). I puttered around the neighborhood for a few minutes before taking it out on the main road for some in-traffic practice. I must say that the ownership of a motorcycle and the use thereof is very confidence-inspiring. It's hard to feel like there's anything in this world unable to be achieved, once one has got throttle-clutch-shift-clutch-throttle down.

Soon, Calvin may even deem me acceptable to ride with, and will actually be seen In Public alongside me on a ride. Oh, the heights I aspire to. Heh. No, he's not being a snob about it. He wants me to concentrate completely on my ride, and not what he's up to, so he wants me to practice some more before we go out together. He knows me so well. My attention will be so focused on his cute ass that I'll forget all about my own business.

I am also occupied with finding just the right personalized license plate to acquire. Service Arizona (dot) com has a search capability so one can find out if one's desired plate is available. I've been having a bitch of a time. All the plates I want are taken. It's hard to come up with a five letter/number combo that accurately portrays my fascinating personality.

I'm on vacation for the next week. I have no plans. We're going to the G-Rents for Thanksgiving, so I don't have a lot that I have to cook. I anticipate the occupation of my days to be thus:

  1. Sleep late.
  2. Eat food.
  3. Work out.
  4. Ride the motor.
  5. Do something vaguely useful.

Numbers 1, 2, and 4 are guaranteed to happen. Numbers 3 and 5? Rather less likely.

Yes, AGAIN.

Again with the changing of the blog template. I was having trouble with the previous one, and when I contacted the creator to get some advice, I was informed that the website the template was hosted on did not have permission to use her designs! So. Like a good netizen, I removed the template and went with something that is (hopefully!) sanctioned.

Word to the wise - even if your material is coming from what you think is a reliable source, if the author/designer/owner is listed, contact them first to make sure all is kosher!

I now return you to your regularly scheduled blog.

Goodbyes.

Lilly, Robert, Devlin and Roman have been gone for two weeks as of today.

Michael and Lilly have decided to separate, and in the aftermath of that decision came Lilly's departure back to Texas with the babies. She's staying with her parents and ALL of their dogs (heh). Michael is continuing to live with us until he moves in with a roommate in December or January.

The house has been quiet ("TOO quiet."), in a manner of speaking, since they left. Gone are the sounds of the three boys (and what little noise Lilly made) wreaking their havoc, returned are the sounds of late-night visits by Michael and Marie's friends (wreaking their havoc). Party House was on hiatus while the babies were here; it seems to have returned with a vengeance. Which is fine, while Calvin and I are participating in the festivities. During the weekend. It's when the noise continues (or BEGINS) after we've gone to bed during the work-week that things get rather annoying.

We all miss the babies terribly. It's hard to think about all that we'll be missing as they grow up so far away from us. We were so blessed to be able to have them for the six months they lived with us -- hard as it was, chaotic as it was, and frustrating (at times) as it was, we really did enjoy having everyone at home.

We made some really wonderful memories, which I guess will have to sustain us in the now few and far-between times we'll get to see Lilly and the boys. I'm glad that Lilly's parents will have the opportunity to make some memories of their own, but still. Rats.

Make of it what you will.

"I was only asking for, like, four hours."

"FOUR HOURS?!? You never even give me four hours!!!"

Still the same old us.

I've been browsing through some of my old entries and came across quite a few that describe precisely what we're doing right now.

Saturday night, Calvin's blasting the tunes and playing DJ, I'm writing an entry, we had some hysterical conversation with Marie and a bunch of her friends, we imbibed in some beer and tequila, we looked through some family photos, and everyone's in a goofy mood.

Thus far is has been quite an excellent weekend. After work Calvin and I went to the local Kawasaki dealership and bought me my first motorcycle. Yes, me. Yes, MINE. (Mine mine mine! Down down down! Back back back!) It's an '07 Vulcan 900 Custom. It looks like this:

No pictures of my own, yet. But soon you'll be sick of 'em, there'll be so many.

After we left the dealership (Calvin riding, me following in the truck), we made a quick stop at home so I could grab my helmet and climb on behind Calvin. We cruised up to Monkey Pants, a bar in Tempe. I'm going to get one of their T-shirts - the front says "Thank you for coming in my pants," and the back says, "Don't worry, I'll clean up."

HAR!

We headed back home, and then went to an empty parking lot so I could practice riding. Calvin stood by and re-explained things, and was patient as I stalled a couple of times (of course), but I soon got something of a hang of it. I practiced finding the clutch/throttle balance and going from a halt to first to a halt again. Then he waited as I looped around the parking lot a couple of times (...becoming geeked and yelling, "I shifted!" Wow, Laura. First to second gear! Laws.)

Back home and into the truck for a beer/munchies run, but not much further into the evening Calvin was feeling rather under the weather. So he went to bed and I prepared myself for a quiet evening on the couch. Except that I wasn't allowed. Michael and Marie were home, in very high good spirits, and they had some friends over. So we all sat out on the patio for, oh, at least a few hours, shooting the shit and having some rather HONEST conversation (I kept leaping up every half-hour or so to go snoofie snoofie at 'my baby' in the garage). It's cool how are relationships are shifting from child/parent to adult/adult.

This morning we got up fairly early (8:00 is more than respectable for us on a weekend!), made some egg and cheese sandwiches, read the paper/surfed the 'net, and fortified ourselves with coffee. Around lunchtime we hopped back on the (new! blue! pretty!) bike for a ride up to Mill Avenue. We stopped for a light lunch at Rula Bula, then continued up to Scottsdale, swinging around through the historical downtown area, and back toward Tempe and a quick stop at the Sonoran Brewing Company for some Reaper Ale.

Back home again, I shoo'ed Calvin off of the motorcycle so I could tool around the neighborhood. I'm getting pretty comfortable now with stopping/starting/shifting, keeping the bike where I point it, and gaining confidence.

Except for when the guy in the truck parked to the side of the road suddenly decided to roar out in front of me without looking. I swerved, managed somehow to stall, and *almost* layed the bike down. It was a close thing and I did end up damaging a mirror (the lowest part to hang down). I got myself straightened around (the damn bike is damn heavy, damn it), back on the road, and continued to enjoy myself for a few more minutes before heading back home.

Calvin was not. pleased. about the mirror. Well, and neither was I, but as far as mishaps go (and hello, new rider + new bike = mishaps) it was very minor, easily repairable, and a good learning experience.

So, I'm still geeked as all get out and very confident that I'll be tearing around the streets like a pro in no time. Calvin and I are going to ride together - him on his bike, me on mine (squee!) - and go somewhere for breakfast tomorrow morning.

Not a bad way AT ALL to spend a weekend.
